Mischief in the Mushroom Patch

Lilly knelt down in the middle of the daisy patch and carefully placed the basket beside her. She ran her hand over the daisies as she wondered which one to pick. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted the perfect one. Gently she snapped the stalk and laid the beautiful daisy carefully in her basket. Lost in her thoughts, she was not prepared for what happened next. It started with a very unusual sound, and it sounded as if it were headed directly toward her.

Ahhhhh, Ohhhhh, Awww.

Lilly stopped gathering daisies, jumped up, and stared into the treetops. Branches were snapping like twigs, and leaves were scattering everywhere. Desperately searching for the source of the commotion, she realized that it wasn’t an ordinary forest disturbance. The intensity of the sounds made her heart race.

“What on Earth is that?” she asked herself, her voice quivering. “I could have sworn in the midst of all the ruckus I heard a cry…”

Ahhhhh, Awwwww, Ohhhhhh.

There it was again, only this time the sound was clear and chilling. It was a scream—a cry of distress. The urgency in the scream sent shivers down her spine. Determined to uncover the mystery, Lilly followed the unceasing cries. With each step, her curiosity multiplied. She glanced around, her eyes scanning the surroundings, and decided it was in her best interest to hide or, at the very least, get out of harm’s way. Acting swiftly, she darted behind a towering, moss-covered oak tree, concealing herself amidst the shadows.

As she pressed against the rough bark, heart pounding in her chest, the cries grew even louder. Every fiber of her being urged her to investigate further, despite the danger that lingered in the air. Just as she was about to venture out from her hiding spot, she heard yet another cry—this one, unlike the others, was unmistakable.

“Oh no, this is going to hurt,” she whispered, her voice filled with concern.

The voice was closer than ever, and Lilly’s fear deepened. Moments like these tested her courage to the limits. With her pulse racing, she, against all her instincts, mustered the bravery to inch closer, moving cautiously toward the desperate sound. She ventured through the maze of mossy stones, gracefully avoiding the scattered mushrooms that dotted the forest floor. The closer she got, the clearer the cries became, tugging at her heartstrings with an undeniable sense of urgency.

As she pushed forward, small glimpses of a hidden world began to reveal themselves through the thick foliage. She stumbled upon an enchanting mushroom patch bathed in dappled sunlight—a vibrant kaleidoscope of colors and shapes that seemed to dance in harmony with nature’s whims. And there, amidst the tinkling laughter of woodland creatures and the melodious whistle of the breeze, stood a group of mischievous fairies.

With their iridescent wings fluttering, these whimsical beings playfully teased and tickled a tiny woodland creature trapped in a tangle of thorny vines. The creature, a small hedgehog named Hodge, appeared frightened and vulnerable, unable to escape the prickly trap. It was the agony of Hodge’s cries that had drawn Lilly’s attention, filling her heart with an undeniable desire to help.

Filled with determination, Lilly stepped forward, her presence noticeable to the fairies and their captive companion. They froze, startled by her sudden appearance. Lilly’s eyes met theirs, conveying an unspoken plea for compassion. Understanding the stakes, the fairies exchanged mischievous glances before extending their delicate hands, using their magical touch to gently untangle the thorny vines entwined around Hodge.

As the last thorn relinquished its grip, Hodge scurried away to safety. Gratitude radiated from the hedgehog’s beady eyes as it disappeared into the safety of the underbrush. The fairies, now aware of Lilly’s kind heart and courageous spirit, circled around her, their wings creating a mesmerizing symphony in the air.

“Thank you,” one of the fairies whispered, her voice carrying the weight of countless unspoken tales, “for rescuing our friend Hodge. You have shown us the power of empathy and the boundless beauty of bravery.”

Lilly couldn’t help but smile, her heart swelling with a sense of fulfillment. In that extraordinary moment, she understood that even in the most unexpected of encounters, there was potential for magic and friendship to thrive. With newfound connections forged, Lilly bid farewell to her newfound fairy friends, knowing that her path forward would forever be touched by the enchantment of the mushroom patch and the courage that lay within her own soul.

A Fairy Match in the Mushroom Patch

Rosie, Ivy, and Pearle had gathered around the foot of Lilly’s bed; they were tickling her toes and whispering her name. Lilly finally sat up and glanced at Madame Louise, who was motioning toward her. Lilly knew it was time – time for their hug. Madame Louise grabbed all four little fairies, pulled them close, and gave them a little hug to start the day. She did it every morning to each and every one.

Lilly jumped out of bed and glanced at Pearle. “May I, Pearle,” she whined. “Please?”

Pearle nodded and tapped her lap. “Of course,” she giggled, “come on!”

Lilly jumped straight from the bed into little Pearle’s lap. “Could you please take me to the bathing room? I have misplaced my slippers and my toes are freezing,” Lilly said as she pointed to her tiny feet.

Pearle’s face lit up. There was nothing she loved more than giving the girls a ride on her lap. Pearle’s Chariot, the fairlings called it. Although Pearle used it daily, there was no slowing her down; she was incredibly fast in the chair that the elders had designed specifically for her. Often going too fast, especially around corners when playing her favorite game, make a fairling green! Spinning as fast as she could around and around on her back two wheels, trying to make the fairies sick. She could almost always make Boris sick and sometimes even Jack. Lilly often turned grey, though not quite green, and Ivy and Rosie, well, they were pros just like Pearle.

“To the bathing room,” Pearle said playfully.

“To the bathing room!” All the little fairies giggled as Madame Louise looked on.

I have been enjoying reading this book series. If you enjoy fantasy and fairies then I want to tell you this is a great series for you. Elementary readers will enjoy it, but for fantasy and fairy fans this is a series you can enjoy as well.

This is an exciting story. It is full of magic and adventure. This is a perfect story for a fairy world. The writer of this series keeps her young readers in mind. She not only provides wonderful stories and characters she also writes in a way younger readers will understand.

Spider  Web Scramble

The mushroom patch, located deep in the forest,

buzzed with excitement.  Mademoiselle  Francesca tried to gather the fairies that danced around her, but it wasn’t easy. After all, they’d been preparing for one of their favorite games for weeks: spider web jumping. Mademoiselle placed a finger on her lips and shushed the fairlings.

“A word, please,” she said softly. “That’s right, dears, gather around.” She pointed toward the ceiling. All the fairies looked up and laughed.

“Jack, please come down from the rafters. Now, if you don’t mind. We’re all waiting.”

Normally she would have scowled at him, but the excitement that rippled through the hall had touched everyone, including the elders. No place for scolding today, not even for Jack. Jack circled twice and slowly lowered himself to the ground. Nudging Boris, he pointed up toward the rafters. Boris glanced up and

noticed a bright red handkerchief wrapped around the highest one. Jack’s face was beaming, knowing that Boris would have to retrieve it. Nice one, thought Boris. It would be far more difficult to retrieve the handkerchief than it had been for Jack to place it there in the first place. Jack flew perfectly, but no matter how hard Boris tried, he still struggled with flight and heights. But Boris accepted the challenge and gave Jack a thumbs-up to seal the deal. The sound of Mademoiselle’s voice reminded them to pay attention.

“I have a very special announcement,” Mademoiselle Francesca said as she walked among the fairies and gently touched the tops of their heads.

If you haven’t read any of the books in this series I recommend you do. This one could be read on its own, but it is so much more fun to start from the beginning. You get to know the world and the characters the author has created.

I enjoyed the lesson of compassion within the pages of this well-written story. Young readers will like this book and benefit from reading it. The writer does a great job presenting characters we can relate to even though they are fairies. The characters are full of fun and mischief that brings the book to life.

Stranger in the Mushroom Patch

Lilly stared at her feet as she walked down the hallway. Deep in thought, she had no idea she was about to run into her friends. Rosie’s sharp voice, asking Lilly what on earth she was doing, was a stern reminder to look where she was going. When asked if all was well, she threw up her tiny hands, shrugged her shoulders, and had no idea how to respond. When Lilly did reply, there was a noticeable amount of nervousness in her voice. Mademoiselle Francesca had sent for her during the dining hour, and that

alone was very odd indeed.

“I’m not sure if all is well.”

“I’m sure it’s nothing,” Pearle replied, trying to put Lilly’s mind at ease. “It’s not like you’re Boris or Jack.”

Finding time to write as a parent can be challenging, but with some planning and prioritization, it is possible. Here are some tips to help you carve out time for writing:

1. Establish a writing routine: Set aside a specific time each day or week dedicated solely to writing. It could be early mornings, during nap times, or after the kids go to bed. Consistency is key to developing a writing habit.

2. Communicate with your family: Let your family know about your writing goals and the importance of having dedicated writing time. Ask for their support and understanding, and find ways to involve them in activities that can keep them occupied while you write.

3. Utilize short pockets of time: Look for small windows of time throughout the day when you can write. It could be during your child’s extracurricular activities while waiting for appointments or during breaks at work. Use these moments to jot down ideas, outline chapters, or revise your work.

4. Prioritize and delegate: Identify non-essential tasks that can be delegated or postponed to free up more time for writing. It may involve asking your partner, family members, or friends to help with household chores, childcare, or other responsibilities.

5. Create a writing space: Designate a specific area in your home where you can focus on writing. Make it a comfortable, organized, and inspiring space that helps you get into the writing mindset. This will also signal to your family that you are in your writing zone.

6. Set realistic goals: Be mindful of your available time and set achievable writing goals. Start with smaller writing targets and gradually increase them as you become more comfortable and efficient in managing your time.

7. Use technology to your advantage: Make use of writing apps, voice-to-text tools, or note-taking apps on your phone to capture ideas or write during moments when sitting down with a computer is not feasible.

8. Seek support from other writers: Join writing groups or online communities where you can connect with other writers who understand the challenges of balancing writing with parenting. They can offer advice, motivation, and accountability.

Remember, it’s important to be flexible and adaptable as a parent. Some days may be more challenging than others, but with determination and a bit of creativity, you can find time to pursue your writing passion while fulfilling your parenting responsibilities.
